What the placements show
A candidate’s background can contain useful evidence that a job title misses. International programming competition experience and founder experience are different signals. They invite different questions about problem solving, ownership and the conditions in which someone works well.
What still needs to be assessed
An achievement is a starting point for a conversation. A founding engineer brief also needs to establish product judgement, communication, motivation and how responsibilities will be shared with the founder. Strong evidence in one area does not answer every question about fit.
Apply that thinking to your hire
Start with the work and the decisions your first engineers will own. Then ask which parts of a candidate’s experience provide relevant evidence. This keeps the search open to people with different paths while making the assessment specific to your company.
